Micro Clinic
Brief information on Micro Clinic
The Micro Clinic concept is when a group of healthcare professionals in their own independent practice regroup in using one locale for their practice without the high overhead. The major advantage of a Micro-Clinic is that health professionals may spend more time with their patients, to reduce the waiting time to see a healthcare professional and ensuring a better-quality care and at very affordable costs.
The multi-ethnic population of Mauritius has undergone rapid industrialization and economic growth over the past several decades, and this has brought in its wake a shift in the disease pattern. Through previous surveys in 1987, 1992, 1998, 2004, 2009 and 2015 conducted by the Ministry of Health and Quality of Life (MoH&QL), in collaboration with the World Health Organization, Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute (formerly the International Diabetes Institute) and partners, it has been shown that the prevalence of several chronic diseases including diabetes mellitus was very high and, on the increase, alongside with their associated complications.
In Mauritius, Mortality due to diseases of the Circulatory system and diabetes significantly increase from 31% of total deaths in 1975 to 46% in 1990 and peaked at 59% in 2007. Numerous studies of diabetes and other non-communicable diseases in Mauritius have been carried out in Mauritius and have shown the emergence of an alarming lifestyle change. However, the undiminished rise in NCDs is a cause of great concern to the whole community. Thus, the importance of having basic health services available to the community, which is currently being achieved through the Micro-Clinic project of Century Welfare Association.
