What should the month of Ramadan refer us to? Undoubtedly, first, to a state of soul, heart and mind. Seeking to move forward without understanding the meaning of our effort, jihad in Arabic, is tantamount to proclaiming a state as one thing when it is the opposite in the soul, the heart and the spirit.
Reducing our state to an ideological problem is just as serious. Because no ideology worthy of the name can accept, for example, the fact of killing innocent people. When it comes to children like in Manchester, but we could add Baghdad, Aleppo, Peshawar and so many other places, the barbarism only becomes more insane. Can there be an ideology that could explain such acts? If this is the case, it can only be what is contrary to Islam.
Even if Trump has changed his language when talking about terrorism, the fact remains that he is wrong. Diagnosis first by recognizing an ideology that would be behind terrorism. Then, he is mistaken in not recognizing the failure of the fight against terrorism. In the end, he errs in not realizing that what he is proposing will only make the evil of terrorism worse.
Coincidence
Historically, the permission granted to Muslims to move from resistance, without fighting with arms those who attack them unjustly, to the possibility of defending themselves physically coincides with the prescription of fasting in the month of Ramadan. It is only fifteen years after the accession of the Prophet (saw), marked by unprecedented persecution, and only when the conditions are met in Medina for a just and organized response, that jihad can become an armed struggle, submitted to strict regulation with respect for the dignity of the men who are being fought.
